Northern Afghanistan | 2 Children Killed 2 Injured By Landmine

Kabul, Afghanistan (Mar 10) – Four Afghan children were playing, when a mine/explosive device was detonated killing two and wounding two others. The incident occurred in the, Faryab Province of northern Afghanistan.

General Mohammad Zahir Azmi. MOD spokesman had this to say regarding the incident, “This is a tragedy, especially since innocent children were killed and injured” adding, “Accidents involving unexploded ordinance or mines planted by the insurgents hurt and kill innocent civilians, and we will continue our efforts to educate civilians about mines and help to prevent these accidents.”

ISAF supports a mine-awareness program that includes, media campaigns, billboards, and provides comic books to children explaining the dangers the lurk in their areas.

The Mine Action Programme of Afghanistan reports, more that 45 Afghans have been injured or killed each month in 2009 due to encounters with mines and explosive devices, some remnants of previous wars.
