Nigerian Police to Halt Protest March to Aso Rock

Eromo Egbejule, Nigeria

The Nigerian Police said it will prevent members of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG) from getting anywhere near the vicinity of Aso Rock, the Nigerian presidential quarters.

WorldNewsVine learned from a statement released by the Police Commissioner for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Haruna John that the restriction is to ensure that no violence of any kind occurs within or around the premises of Aso Rock to further compound the current security crisis in the country.

According to the Commissioner:

“We have read through the media that the Save Nigeria Group wants to protest at the Presidential Villa. We all know that certain locations are off limit. They are not protesting at the National Assembly but the Presidential Villa. It is a known fact that nobody can protest at the White house or No 10 Downing Street but people can protest at the Congress in America.”

“Therefore, we are not going to allow them to get near the Villa. We are not preventing them from expressing their democratic rights but certainly we are not going to allow them beyond certain limits.”

The protesters are protesting against the continued absence of the sick President Umaru Yar’ adua from the spotlight; his alleged kidnapping by his wife and First Lady Turai, and the refusal of the Federal Executive Council to invoke Section 144 and declare him incapacitated to rule the country.

The protest march is scheduled for tomorrow, March 11, 2010.
