KABUL, Afghanistan (March 13) – In separate operations yesterday joint security teams engaged eight militants killing three and wounding another, captured a Taliban sub-Commander, and detained several others.
In Shir Sorkh, following intelligence reports indicating militant activity in the area, security teams entered a small compound. Upon entering the compound the militants opened fire on the security forces. Following an exchange of gunfire, three militants were killed, one wounded, and the rest detained. The wounded militant was identified as a foreign fighter responsible for providing logistical support for foreign fighters entering Afghanistan.
Further inspection of the compound resulted in the seizure of a weapons cache containing, rocket-propelled grenades, automatic weapons, and hand grenades.
In a separate incident, joint security forces outside of Mirzagol Kala following on intelligence indicating militant activity in the area, searched a compound and captured a Haqqani sub-Commander. The Commander was responsible for training, purchasing explosive components, distribution, and recruitment, training of cell members. Two other insurgents were detained.
Also seized at the compound were rifles, a blasting cap and a large sum of cash.
Meanwhile, in Nagzhan security forces following up on intelligence reports captured a Taliban leader, and two militants. The Taliban leader has been responsible for planning attacks against coalition forces. The Taliban surrendered without incident.
Two weapons caches were seized in Tarin Kot district of Uruzgan Province containing: three rocket-propelled grenades, a mortar round, two grenades, 20 meters of detonation cord along with, 350 rounds of small-arms ammunition. The caches were destroyed.
No civilian causalities were reported in any of the operations.
