I began this article in high spirits, having just returned from a holiday in Holland where I spent the majority of my time in coffee shops sampling the best coffee Amsterdam has to offer. I don’t know how much you know about Amsterdam or Holland in general, but the coffee is amazing and there are a lot of different blends to try.
As I trawled the internet, catching up with news that I may have missed like: David Cameron being praised by the US Government for his help with the situation in Northern Ireland; the Earth possibly shifting off its axis slightly, resulting in the days becoming shorter, both due to the earthquake in Chile (PANIC EVERYONE!); and a 130 year old lady who still drinks straight vodka everyday, to name but a few. While I was reading these stories the tragic news broke that Corey Haim had died of an overdose.
Corey Haim, 38, was a pin up of massive proportions in the 80’s, my sister papered her room with his pictures, he was the star of such classics as ‘Silver Bullet‘, ‘Licence to Drive’ and the incredible ‘The Lost Boys’. Drug problems have plagued him throughout his career, and he went on record many times about the severity of his addictions. He was found unconscious in the Oakwood residence he shares with his mother, who was home at the time.
The Toronto born actor never got back to the heights he reached in the 80’s, despite working his way through the 90’s. Only recently, in the last couple of years, he took out an ad in a trade magazine announcing his big comeback, asking for someone to give him a break. It worked and he got back to making movies. He completed at least 2 films in 2010 alone, and given the 5 or 6 projects he was connected with, it could be safe to assume that this was just another tragic accidental OD.
The boyish charm that made him famous, and the plum roles that came with it may have deserted him in the last 15 years or so, but his classic movies including, as mentioned ‘the Lost Boys’, have stood the test of time. His work with ‘fellow Corey’, Corey Feldman and the levels they reached together are as iconically 80s as DeLorean cars, Stockbrokers and cocaine. He may not be mourned like other stars who die young, and I don’t see any awards going his way just because he died. I doubt there will be any overreaction at all, sadly, because anyone who grew up in the 80’s will feel very sad today. Corey Haim, December 23 1971 – March 10 2010.

Beautifully written HH. I agree totally with your sentiment. He was a star of the 80s and like a lot of child stars of that time he went down a dark path. Gonna watch the lost boys this weekend in honor of him!
