Nogales, Ariz (Mar 8, 2010) – In two separate incidents last Friday, Border Patrol agents seized over 5,000 pounds of marijuana. Alerted by canines on duty, the first arrest was made after a tractor trailer was flagged to a secondary inspection station. Agents at the Interstate 19 checkpoint then utilized a Non-Intrusive Inspection system (NII) to locate the illicit cargo hidden within produce onboard the trailer.

Upon further inspection of the trailer over 5,061 pounds of marijuana was confiscated. The illicit cargo with a street value of close to $4 million dollars, along with the truck, and driver were taken to Nogales for processing.

In a separate incident at the same checkpoint, again canine units alerted agents as a pick-up truck enter the inspection station. Using the NII system, agents located over 108 pounds of marijuana hidden within panels of the truck. The estimated street values of this “haul” $86,000.

In a press release by the Border Patrol, Nogales Station’s Patrol Agent in Charge Alan White stated, “These seizures are proof that our agents will continue to remain vigilant as we continue to foil smugglers’ attempts to bring contraband into the United States,” and further added “The Border Patrol continues to use the right mix of technology and personnel to strengthen our ‘Defense in Depth’ strategy for combating the flow of contraband into the interior.”

The press release further states that since the beginning of Fiscal Year 2010, the Tucson Sector has seized over 460,000 pounds of marijuana thanks in part to the new technology such as: high-tech scanners, and canines  and has proven to be an invaluable asset in the “War on Drugs”.

Marijuana use itself is not that bad, it’s the marijuana laws that are the problem. If someone chooses to consume marijuana, they should do it responsibly. The first step toward re-education on marijuana is getting people to realize what the current laws are. Depending on which state you are in, you can get jail time and hefty fines for just testing positive for marijuana or possessing a used pipe. Want to know what the marijuana laws are in your state?
