6.1 Mb – Aftershocks continue to rattle Chile | Maule

Maule, Chile – Aftershocks continue with the latest recorded 6.1 at 6:25 am EST, located 63 kilometers North of Talca, and 184 kilometers South Southwest of Santiago, Chile lasting a little over one second.

Since then, an additional series of aftershocks ranging 4.8 to 5.2 Mb have been felt up and down the coast leaving Millions homeless, and sending Tsunami warnings throughout the Pacific.

More than 300 people have been reported dead, with that number expected to rise. An unknown number of citizens remain trapped inside the rubble, status unknown.

President Michelle Baschelet stated, “It was a catastrophe of devastating consequences.”  Over 500,000 homes are estimated destroyed, highways damaged, and entire neighborhoods leveled to the ground. Flooding is also apparent in several areas.

The quake that struck Chile, 8.8 in magnitude was 500 times more powerful than the earthquake that struck Haiti. Fortunately this quake was located some 22 miles from densely populated areas whereas; the Haiti quake was much closer to populated areas of that small island nation.
