Operational Update – ISAF Joint Command – Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (Dec. 26) – An Afghan-international security force killed a Taliban commander responsible for planning attacks against joint security forces and buying weapons and IED components in Wardak today.

A joint security force went to a compound outside the town of Pirdad, in the Nerkh district after intelligence sources confirmed militant activity. When the joint Afghan-international force approached the compound, the Taliban commander ran to a building, later identified as a mosque, a kilometer away. The Afghan security force surrounded the mosque and called for him to exit peacefully and when he didn’t, the Afghan security force entered the mosque. The Taliban commander opened fire with his AK-47 while in the mosque and was killed by the Afghan security force. The Taliban commander was heavily armed with grenades and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

The Taliban continue to violate the sanctity of mosques as protected places. The Afghan-international force does everything possible to avoid fighting in or around any known mosque.

In an operation in Khowst last night, an Afghan-international security force captured several militants including a known Haqqani facilitator.

The joint force searched a compound northwest of the village of Guldar, in the Sabari district, after receiving information there was militant activity in the area and detained the militants.

The joint force recovered multiple AK-47 rifles, hand grenades and IED components from the home of the Haqqani facilitator.

In an operation in Laghman today, an Afghan-international security force detained a few suspected militants while searching for a Taliban facilitator.

The joint force searched a small compound outside the village of Bagh-e-Mirza, in the Mehter Lam district after intelligence sources suspected militant activity inside and detained the militants.

In an operation in Kandahar last night, an Afghan-international security force captured a Taliban facilitator and a small group of other militants.

A joint security force searched a building in Kandahar City after intelligence units confirmed militant activities in the immediate area and captured the militants.

No Afghan civilians were harmed in any of the operations.
